RAFAEL A. OSUBA, Biography – (1967)
Osuba (Puerto Rican) cultural producer, visual artist, narrator, defender of the arts, author, editor, mentor and self-proclaimed Quixote, has been an artist as long as he can remember. He learned at a very young age that by utilizing his talent he could engage people and create relationships. He says “Art is all around us; it is up to us to see its beauty.” Art is the vehicle he uses to stay connected to his culture. “Every person, drawing, painting, sculpture, song, dance, food and literary work has a story behind it, capturing a feeling, a memory or expression and sharing it with the world is where the magic lies.”
Osuba has effectively used his creativity to build businesses and to help others be successful in what they do. He has been an art advocate in North Carolina for over 28 years and has pioneered many projects that have helped to further the Latino Art movement. He has served on numerous boards and volunteers in numerous community events.
Most recently the Smithsonian Institute recognized him as the first to produce commercial Spanish television in North Carolina, with his social issues program “Vamos a Conversar” a 90 minute live call-in television program reaching over 800,000 homes each week. (52 programs in total) He has produced numerous visual art exhibits including the first and only to date traveling visual art exhibit entitled “Raices – Roots”, viewed by an estimated 60,000 people across ten cities in North Carolina.
In 2011, he launched Artist Studio Project, with the intention of creating the El Quixote Festival (2015), a seven-month collaborative festival that commemorates the writer and Spanish literary giant Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra and 400 years of “Don Quixote” two books that changed his life. Now wrapping up its fourth year, the First Annual Festival was very successful spanning 10 cities across North Carolina reaching an estimated 50,000 people and filled with over 150 days of programming, with most of the events free and open to the general public. An aggressive outreach program with, numerous educational events and workshops at all levels, elementary, middle and high schools, community colleges, and universities, to include theatre, international musical concerts, statewide visual arts exhibits, renowned award winning scholars, international theatrical performances, literary gatherings with published authors, blockbuster award winning international films, global conferences on El Quixote, numerous lectures and culinary events. The festival culminates each year with a live reading marathon by the featured artist. In its inaugural year, it produced the first and largest Live Multilingual Marathon Reading of Don Quixote, which spanned more than 5 days and included 8 major universities in North Carolina, including CastiLa (International Center for Hispanic Studies) in Granada, Spain. The live itinerant literary marathon had more than 500 readers who read Don Quixote 1 and 2 in 18 languages. With the success of the first year, the festival has become an annual event celebrating literary figures such as Gabriel García Márquez in the second year, Sor Juana Inés de La Cruz in the third year and this year with the Cuban poet and hero José Martí.
In 2016, he launched Artist Studio Project Publishing LLC, with the main purpose of helping new writers publish their works. During the third year 2017-18, ASP Books published 4 books: Luisito Celebrates Three Kings’ Day, Luisito Celebra El Dia De Los Reyes, Quijotesco Y Cervantino (Quixotic and Cervantine), Mis Juguetes De Hojalata (My Tin Toys) and Be Patient – Se Paciente. At this time there are four more books in production with releases scheduled for 2019 -2021.
In the third year of the Quixote Festival: The Tenth Muse a 2017 -2018 (Tribute to Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz), the 1st annual Cervantino Bilingual Book Fair was added and took place in October, in Raleigh, NC, with the participation of 20 writers from several states across the nation. ASP BOOKS was officially launched at the book fair featuring four newly published books along with Coquí Books, its special line of bilingual and bicultural children’s books which ASP tours elementary schools with its Bicultural Book Fair.
It is worth noting that children have received special attention from ASP BOOKS, through Coquí Books it keeps the creative space of children active, organizing events in schools, such as “Let’s write a story”, an event aimed at middle school children across North Carolina.
Most recently he was invited to travel to the People’s Republic of China by Duke Kunshan University to exhibit his art work “Tainos” and share a portion of The Libia Posada exhibit “Be Patient – Se Paciente” along with ASP Books published book “Be Patient | Se Paciente: Artistic and Medical Entanglements in the Work of Libia Posada”.
He lives in Raleigh North Carolina with his wife, best friend and “Muse” of over 30 years Michelle and identifies their three children Rafael Jr, Gabrielle and Leilani as his most important works of art!

Osuba (puertorriqueño) productor cultural, artista visual, narrador, defensor de las artes, autor, editor, mentor y autoproclamado Quijote, ha sido un artista desde que tiene memoria. Aprendió a una edad muy temprana que al utilizar su talento podía involucrar a las personas y crear relaciones. Él dice: “El arte está a nuestro alrededor; Depende de nosotros ver su belleza”. En el tercer año del Festival: La Decima Musa 2017 -2018 (Homenaje a Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz), se agregó la Primera Feria anual del Libro Bilingüe de Cervantino, que tuvo lugar en octubre, en Raleigh, Carolina del Norte, con la participación. de 20 escritores de varios estados de la nación. ASP BOOKS se lanza oficialmente en la feria del libro con 3 libros junto con Coquí Books, su línea especial de libros bilingües y biculturales para niños. Libros ASP recorre las escuelas primarias con su Feria del Libro Bicultural.

Más recientemente, fue invitado a viajar a la República Popular de China por la Universidad Duke Kunshan para exhibir su obra de arte “Tainos” y compartir una parte de la exhibición de Libia Posada “Be Patient – Se Paciente”, junto con el libro publicado por ASP Books “Be Patient | Se Paciente: Artistic and Medical Entanglements in the Work of Libia Posada” (Enredos Artísticos y Médicos en la Obra de Libia Posada).
