A cerca del libro ‘La Fragancia del Agua’ –  The Fragrance of Water

Cielo Ramirez, poetess, writer, painter.

My dear sister, Fanny Cielo Ramirez, was born in Pereira, Colombia, on December 1st of a year that she never wanted to remember. She studied at Los Sagrados Corazones, and always had beautiful memories of her friends from the school, teachers, and her youth in Medellín, Colombia.

She loved reading and was passionate about reading Gabriela Mistral; romantic dreamer she also adored love novels. She studied accounting to later realize that her passions were to write and paint everything that came out of her heart.

She married another art lover, Edgar Jarrin, called the Master of the Spatula in Caracas, Venezuela; two young people fall in love with life and art, and so she continued her studies with different teachers in Caracas.

In the early 70’s she realizes another dream, this time that of being a mother. Her only son, Edgar Junior, who is now an architect based in Madrid, Spain, was the great joy of her life.

At the beginning of the 90s, she established her home in Charlotte, North Carolina, a place she loved dearly until the end of her days, where she realized more of her dreams and managed to write with other poets a beautiful book called “The Fragrance of Water.” Her paintings and poems remain in our minds making her immortal in our hearts.

Grateful to God, life, family and friends, she rests in the Peace of the Lord the day before her birthday, November 30, 2019.

Copious falls the rain outside, and in my heart the disbelief slides to find an exit converted into tears that roll upon my cheeks as my tremulant mouth receives them and they turn into the bitterness of sadness and disconcertment. Cielo has passed away reads the text, but the message is not clear to me. Do those letters mean that my arms will remain empty longing for a last hug? That the sound of my companion-sister’s voice will not be heard again, filled with her verses, to tell the love stories of her poems?
Silence … my breath is paralyzed and I try to put in order the hecatomb into which my feelings have fallen! I am very upset, how is this possible?, this is absurd, how is my sweet friend going to be ethereal without letting me embrace her, without a word, without even saying to me “Hey dear, take care of yourself, drive safely!” But reality prevails, Cielo has gone. We, her close friends do not understand anything, questions arise, complaints, our voices on the phone, we are not present but we are joined in the crying, the helplessness, the absurd incongruity of death.

I will not describe the human being that was Cielito, in the messages that my eyes read and the reality that rejects my mind, I discover that her virtues are perceptible to everyone who held her close, dear friends and acquaintances that her tenderness has been a presence, her prudence the admiration by all those she left behind.

It’s been hours, less than the spaces that we have spoken, fewer days then when she calls me to complain about why I have not called her! Today I check my voicemail and hear her voice, her complaints and even just a formal friend request saying “Yvette, I need to talk to you, please call me!”

Now, I just want to say that I miss her as if seconds of centuries have passed, that I mourn her absence although the most beautiful memories are crowded in my memory, that it was I who should have looked for her, even though out of vanity, she asked us not to visit her so as not to see her as she put it “looking ugly” because she was hospitalized!!!

I cannot say goodbye to her because she stays with me, my partner of adventures now travels alone, but she provided me tickets so that we may meet again at each station, where the bonds of friendship that eternity does not corrode, smile. Where the beautiful memories will be her presence and the reading of her verses and poems will help to shorten the nostalgia of her undeniable absence.

God embraces her and the universe awaits her, maybe she is already with Cachita playing bridge and celebrating stories and jokes together! Fly free friend of my soul that in the dust of the stars lives your presence!
